RULES FOR CHAIR UMPIRING

As produced by Auckland Tennis and distributed to all clubs.

Auckland Tennis request that we issue these rules to each interclub player and parent.

Sometimes issues develop between players or between parents over the umpiring of games. To minimise issues, these rules have been produced by Auckland Tennis to ensure consistency in the rules.

All players and parents from the opposing team should also have seen and been issued with these rules

The Chair Umpire is responsible for:
- Calling & keeping the score
- Calling all lets
- Adjudicating when players cannot agree on a call

Each player is responsible for:
- Calling the ball on their side of the net
- Making their call:
- Instantaneously.
- In a way that stops play and is obvious to the chair umpire & the opposing player.
- Correcting themselves if they make a mistake in which case the point is awarded to their opponent.
- If a player is unsure of his/her call, the ball is to be called good.
- Not making a call means that the ball has been called good.

Querying Calls
- The Chair Umpire only gets involved when there is a disputed call. If they see a wrong call during play, they are to do nothing, and allow play to continue.
- A player can only question a line call on the opposite side of the net (ie cannot look to the Chair Umpire to confirm his/her call). Any questioning of a call is to be done instantaneously to the umpire.

Umpires Decisions
- When asked the umpire will immediately make a decision either confirming the call or overruling it.
- If overruling, the point is awarded against the player who makes the call
- If the umpire is unsure or unsighted (blocked from viewing) the original call stands.
- The Umpires decision is final. All must accept the decision made.
